Your website is old: do you really need to rebuild it from scratch?

An old website doesn't always need to be scrapped. How to tell whether an update is enough or it's worth starting again from scratch.

Website restyling, from old to modern

"Our website is old" is a sentence we hear often from owners of Ticino SMEs. What follows, though, isn't always clear: is rebuilding it from scratch really necessary, or would a more targeted fix be enough?

The answer varies from case to case. But before deciding, it's worth understanding what "old" really means for a website, and what concrete options are available.

What "old website" really means

A website can be dated for different reasons, which call for different solutions:

  • it's old in appearance: the design, fonts and images speak to an earlier era of the web, even though the content is still valid;
  • it's old in technology: it's built on a platform that's no longer updated, slow or vulnerable from a security standpoint;
  • it's old in structure: it navigates poorly on smartphones, has a confusing content hierarchy, requires too many steps to reach key information;
  • it's old in content: it describes services, prices or information the company changed a long time ago.

These problems often overlap, but not always. And it's precisely this distinction that determines whether a restyle or a completely new project is needed.

When a restyle is enough

If the website's structure works, the content is still correct and the main problem is the visual appearance or a few technical details, a targeted intervention can be enough: a graphic update, image optimisation, speed improvements, a review of the mobile version.

This type of intervention costs less, takes less time and lets you keep what already works, including any ranking you've already achieved on Google.

When it's worth starting from scratch

There are situations where a simple update isn't enough, and continuing to "patch up" the existing website becomes more costly, over time, than rebuilding it:

  • the platform the website is built on is no longer supported or safely updatable;
  • the page structure no longer reflects the company's actual services;
  • the website was never designed for mobile, and adapting it would take more work than rebuilding it;
  • the technical foundations for SEO are missing, and adding them later turns out to be as complicated as starting from scratch;
  • the company has substantially changed its positioning, target audience or offering since the website was created.

In these cases, a new project makes it possible to build a solid foundation, designed for the company's current goals, instead of continuing to work on foundations that are no longer adequate.

A concrete example: our own website

We too, at a certain point, found ourselves facing this question. Our old website worked, but it no longer reflected how we work today, nor did it offer the performance and flexibility we want to guarantee our clients.

We chose to start from scratch, with a new design, a new user experience and more modern, higher-performing technology. We tell the whole story, including the reasons behind this choice, in the article we've rebuilt our website: new design, new experience, new technology.

It's a direct example of how, sometimes, a restyle isn't enough: you need a new foundation to really grow.

How to decide without getting too attached to your current website

A common mistake is judging your website by an emotional yardstick: "we've invested time and money in it, we can't throw it away". This reasoning often keeps alive projects that, from a technical and commercial standpoint, should be replaced.

A more useful way to decide is to ask yourself:

If I had to show this website to a new client today, would I still consider it representative of my company?

If the answer is uncertain or negative, it's worth looking into it more thoroughly with a structured analysis before choosing between a restyle and a rebuild.

Restyle or new website: a summary

Situation Recommended action
Dated design, structure and content still valid Graphic restyle
Outdated or insecure platform New technical project
Non-responsive website, hard to use on mobile Case-by-case assessment, often a new project
Content and offering changed radically New project
No SEO foundations, website poorly visible on Google Case-by-case assessment
